Amy Rueffert

Amy Rueffert’s modern-day curios are inspired by Victorian decorative art objects, which are known for their orderliness and ornamentation, as well as their tendency to mix characteristics from past stylistic eras.

Rueffert's luscious apple, cherry and pear shapes are often presented on vintage glass platters and covered by a blown glass bell jar, resulting in a sense of great preciousness for these usually common objects. Images of flowers, babies, domesticated animals and pin-up girls adorn the surfaces of Rueffert’s forms, along with sections cut from intricately patterned cane-worked vessels and text taken from recipes and bible verses, adding another dimension of preciousness to the work. This playfully poetic patchwork of imagery and pattern refers to another time while also commenting on women’s roles in society.
