Rick Araluce’s impossibly small, self-contained worlds lure the viewer onto a strange and perilous journey to a mysterious place where reason is mocked and the subconscious has free reign. Araluce, who builds sets for the Seattle Opera by day, creates tiny, and slightly more disturbing, scenery in his own artwork. In addition to his eerie miniature pieces, he has recently begun to create life-sized installations which allow the viewer to literally step inside a nightmarish world, created with the same constricted proportions and painstaking attention to ominous detail found in his smaller constructions.
