Traver Gallery is pleased to present Northwest Clay, an invitational ceramics exhibition focusing on the thriving field of clay art in the region. The first in a series of invitational ceramics exhibitions, Traver Gallery will devote the entirety of its exhibition space to showcasing fresh and diverse works by 18 contemporary ceramic artists from California, Oregon, Washington and Montana. Long a center for ceramics, the Northwest continues to be home to many artists working in clay. Mid-century masters like Peter Voulkos, Jim Leedy, and Rudy Autio have left in their wake not only a rich history, but also a coterie of accomplished artists whose work has matured into a freer version of ceramics. From figurative to abstract, today's Northwest clay artists are embracing the sculptural potential of this medium and pushing the boundaries of what was thought could be done in clay, creating room for new materials and new modes of expression. The works in this month long exhibition illustrate the many ways in which today's Northwest ceramic artists are utilizing clay as a fine art and sculptural medium.
