PRESTON SINGLETARY: JOURNEY ACROSS THE FIRE (AND INTO THE WORLD)

Traver Gallery proudly presents Tlingit artists Preston Singletary’s latest body of work, Journey Across the Fire (and Into the World).  This new exhibition continues the artist’s exploration of his Native American heritage through glass sculpture.  Singletary addresses the ongoing discourse between Northwest Coast Native art and Contemporary art, melding culturally significant Native images with the abstract, subtle forms of the Modern Art Movement, responding aggressively to categorization of “Primitive Art” as secondary to other art historical movements.  The resulting exhibition showcases Modern forms bearing traditional Tlingit Formline design; sculptures that exist elegantly in both the Native and Modern realms. 

An international recognized artist, Singletary’s artworks are included in in museum collections such as The British Museum (London, UK), The Museum of Fine Arts (Boston, MA), The Seattle Art Museum (Seattle, WA), the Corning Museum of Glass (Corning, NY), the Mint Museum of Art and Design (Charlotte, NC), the Heard Museum (Phoenix, AZ), and the Smithsonian Institution (Washington DC).  Singletary maintains an active schedule by teaching and lecturing internationally.  In 2009, the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, WA, launched a major mid-career survey of his work, entitled Preston Singletary Echoes, Fire, and Shadows.  The exhibition travelled to venues throughout North America.  Singletary is currently working on a second retrospective museum exhibition scheduled to open in the spring of 2017.
